On 20 December 1991, having been mercilessly stalked, Laurie Show was mutilated and murdered by her love-rival, Lisa Michelle Lambert. It was a crime of exceptional brutality, made all the more shocking by the fact that both killer and victim were teenagers. Rivals tells the bizarre and tragic story of events leading up to the death of Laurie Show. It starts as Laurie (Jennifer Finnigan, The Bold and the Beautiful) moves with her mother Hazel (Mary-Margaret Humes, Dawson’s Creek) to a small town in Pennsylvania. Despite being shy and innocent, Laurie soon realises that Lawrence ‘Butch’ Yunkin (Rel Hunt, Heartbreak High), one of the most popular boys at her new school, finds her attractive. While Butch’s girlfriend, Michelle (Marnette Pattersom, Charmed) appears to befriend Laurie, in secret she is insanely jealous of the obvious attraction between Laurie and Butch. At a party, events take an ugly turn: responding violently to Laurie’s advances, Butch rapes her. Walking in on the attack, Michelle misreads the situation and accuses Laurie of being a seducer. Michelle and her friend Tabitha (Joanne Vannicola, Love and Human Remains) proceed to ruin Laurie’s reputation, branding her a slut and relentlessly harassing her until events bloodily explode on that dark December night. Laurie’s stalking and murder occurred before anti-stalking laws were introduced in Pennsylvania.

Massive Attack's Blue Lines

In 1991, a loose-knit collective released a record called Blue Lines under the name Massive Attack, splicing together American hip-hop and soul with the sounds of the British underground. With its marauding bass lines, angular guitars, and psychedelic effects, Blue Lines built on the Caribbean soundsystems and nascent rave scene of the 1980s while also looking ahead to the group's signature blend of epic cinematics and lush downtempo. In the process, Blue Lines invented an entirely new genre called trip hop and launched the career of a rapper named Tricky. Ultimately, Blue Lines created the sonic playbook for an emerging future: hybrid, digital, cosmopolitan, and rooted in the black and immigrant communities who animated the urban wreckage of the postindustrial city. Massive Attack envisioned an alternate future in sharp counterpoint to the glossy triumphalism of Brit Pop. And while the group would go on to bigger things, this record was both a warning shot and a definitive statement that sounds as otherworldy today as on the day of its release. As Blue Lines's iconic flame logo spun on turntables the world over, Massive Attack and their spaced-out urban blues reimagined music for the 1990s and beyond.

In June, 1991, sitting in his hospital room contemplating cardiac bypass surgery, my father said, “Vus ich hot adorch geleibt!” (What I have lived through!). I wasn’t sure at the time if he meant his recent heart attack, but over time, especially after researching his journey, it became clear to me.I thought I knew my dad’s plight, only to realize some of his most horrible experiences were never brought to my attention. The adage of the first casualty of war as the truth hung in the balance with loss and trauma deserves its own sanctity.Helen Friedman and Sam Bagel walked through the shadows of death, lost their entire nuclear families, and like the phoenix bird re-emerges from its own ashes, they, too, resurrected themselves to start a family and be happy and thankful people. 1. The Road to Safwan: The 1st Squadron, 4th Caval...

The Road to Safwan is a complete history of the 1st Infantry Division's cavalry unit fighting in Operation Desert Storm. Stephen A. Bourque and John W. Burdan III served in the 1st Infantry--Bourque in Division Headquarters, Burdan as the Operations Officer of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. Based on extensive interviews and primary sources, Bourque and Burdan provide the most in-depth coverage to date of a battalion-level unit in the 1991 war, showing how the unit deployed, went into combat, and adapted to changing circumstances. The authors describe how the officers and men moved from the routine of cold war training to leading the Big Red One in battle through the Iraqi defenses and against the Iraqi Republican Guard. The 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry participated in the 1st Brigade attack on G-Day, the large tank battle for Objective Norfolk, the cutting of Basra Road, and the capture of Safwan Airfield, the site where General H. Norman Schwartzkopf conducted cease-fire negotiations with the Iraqis. The squadron's activities are placed squarely within the context of both division and corps activities, which illustrates the fog of war, the chain of command, and the uncertainty of information affecting command decisions. The Road to Safwan challenges the myth that technology won the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Contrary to popular view, it was a soldier's war not much different from previous conflicts in its general nature. What was different was the quality and intensity of the unit's training, which resulted, repeatedly, in successful engagements and objectives secured. It is the story of the people, not the machines, which ultimately led this squadron to the small town of Safwan. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg A. Rizzo. In 1991, Joseph was an M1 tanker in the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) of the US Army. It’s America’s most lethal division, and tanks lead the way. The life expectancy for a tanker was about 15 minutes in battle. His mission was to lead the attack on the enemy minefield while being attacked by chemical and biological weapons. It was a suicide mission, and he was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for extraordinary heroism in war.Tankers don’t surrender! Joseph had months to think about the suicide mission and death before the Gulf War started. He survived the war, but the impact that it had on his life was devastating. Doctors don’t know where the illnesses come from, and there is no cure for many of the diseases. Twenty-two veterans commit suicide daily because of stress. The information in this audiobook isn’t ordinary. This book will show you why your problems aren't a coincidence and how to overcome your greatest challenges! 1. Language: English. Narrator: R.F. McCoy. Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph ...

“Work hard, and don’t look for excuses,” C. Vivian Stringer’s parents told her, “and you can achieve anything.” But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times. A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-white cheerleading squad in the 60s. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her 14-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically black college to the national championships - a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill, fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four. Through these dark times and others, Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story - love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last word.  1. Language: English. Narrator: Adenrele Ojo. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/bkot/001058/bk_bkot_001058_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
