Ghosts of Abandoned Capacity
79,00 € *

The former East Bloc has changed dramatically in the past twenty years. Two decades after publishing Poland in Transition: 1989-1991, Pichaske returns to Lodz, Poland, encountering a landscape both hauntingly familiar and very much transformed, now similar, despite urban-rural differences, to his home in southwestern Minnesota, and to the places many of us inhabit in a global economy which litters the planet with empty factories, crumbling apartments, abandoned barns and schools, ghost towns and forgotten cemeteries. In a series of elegiac meditations on these ghosts of abandoned capacity Pichaske addresses the question of what can be done with our wrecked landscapes (and lives), everything from covering walls with graffiti and murals to renovating factories into apartments, museums, shopping malls, and schools, and just covering over the old places and cemeteries. Pichaske weaves a complex web of words and over 400 photographs, reportage and meditation, objective data and subjective critique, personal and public worlds into a book which, combining the verbal and visual, represents a new form of scholarship for the new century.

The personal cosmology of Hans Ulrich ObristSince 2012, Hans Ulrich Obrist has made a weekly contribution to Das Magazin, the weekend supplement of the Swiss Tages-Anzeigers newspaper, proposing, in the style of a diary, a survey of contemporary art and cultural current affairs. Week after week he reports on the main events, hot topics, and relevant issues of our times through the lens of his extensive knowledge. Offering a very open and globalized mapping of the 2010s, this anthology also reveals the personal cosmology of this curious-about-everything global citizen par excellence: from Etel Adnan and Lina Bo Bardi to Fischli/Weiss, from the importance of sharing and interdisciplinary thinking to the legacy of Édouard Glissant and the need to take into account climate change. This publication offers 100 entries written between 2012 and 2017, a series of drawings by British artist David Shrigley, and a “creative” index listing the names, places, books, and exhibitions mentioned in the columns.Hans Ulrich Obrist (*May 1968, Zurich) is the Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. Since his first show World Soup (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated more than 300 exhibitions. He is the author of A Brief History of Curating, first published in 2007 and now in its seventh printing.
